Training: Building an engaged supporter base

To get people supporting your campaigns, giving money and engaging with your cause, you first need to attract their attention and offer them a compelling reason to support you. And then you need to build a relationship to keep and deepen that support.

In this training - four half-day online sessions split over two separate weeks - we’ll look at how to identify and recruit new supporters, and then how to design and implement supporter journeys that help you achieve your campaigning and fundraising goals.

Training focused on your objectives

At more onion we have lots of experience in delivering high-quality training and workshops both in-person and online. In this series of fully-interactive online sessions, our expert trainers will take you through a tried and tested set of practical, interactive exercises to develop your skills and equip you to get started applying new strategic approaches to your work right away.

With supporter recruitment, we’ll start by stepping back and helping  you think about who you want to recruit and why, before moving on to generating ideas for how you can recruit new supporters and get the most of your budget. We’ll then focus on optimising your actions and explore what the best channels are for reaching your target audiences.

Moving on to supporter journeys, we'll look at how to build meaningful and lasting relationships with your supporters. Taking an audience-driven approach, we'll discuss the strategic foundations of a great supporter journey as well as practical tips and exercises on how to design and implement your own.

How it will work

This training series will consist of four half-day sessions, spread over two weeks, using virtual meeting platform Zoom. There'll be a mix of expert input from more onion digital strategists Claire Donner and Charlotte Jones, practical exercises, group work and discussion with other trainees, plus personal reflection and 'homework' to help you make the most of the contact time.

You can book the full training - two sessions on supporter recruitment and two on supporter journeys, or pick the week that most closely matches your current training needs.

"I would really recommend this course to anyone looking to develop, increase or better engage their supporter base. Despite being virtual, the course facilitators managed to keep things moving and relevant throughout and I came away feeling inspired and motivated, and armed with some practical tips, ideas and techniques. It was also really useful to get an insight into what other charities are doing, and the challenges they face." Sarah Elam, External Relations Manager, The Harpur Trust

"It was a great blend of peer sharing and training, where you get to practically apply the knowledge as you are learning it." Hannah Mae Trow, Campaign engagement officer, The Trussell Trust

"The sessions were very well thought-out and considered as they used different formats to deliver large chunks of information - keeping us engaged throughout but also creating an atmosphere where all questions were welcome.
