Job (25h, Vienna): Systems Architect and Administrator

ABout more onion

More onion is a digital mobilisation agency supporting progressive non-profits and unions all over Europe with digital campaigns and fundraising. Our teams are based in Vienna, Berlin and in the UK.

As an agency we combine strategy consulting, creative communications and technical delivery. More onion is also the company behind Impact Stack: a powerful software platform for digital campaigning and fundraising. Impact Stack is used by charities in over 10 countries and has grown substantially in the past years.

Your Role

This position is directly connected to helping our clients create impact. You will play an active role in maintaining and developing the hosting environment and development environment as well as occasionally developing product components yourself. By collaborating with the technical support team and the product team you will help organisations succeed with Impact Stack.

Technology behind Impact Stack

Impact Stack uses a fairly standard open source hosting stack. Our environments are Linux (Debian) based. We use virtual servers and external hosting platforms. The current version of Impact Stack is based on PHP/Drupal 7 (end of life reached soon) and the upcoming version is based on Python 3.

The day to day systems in use include Ansible, Varnish, Nginx, Gitlab, ELK, InfluxDB, Grafana, Logstash, Vagrant, Sentry, Postfix, Mariadb and Postgresql. At the moment we also maintain a dedicated email server for the product.

Some internal tools like Mattermost and Nextcloud we host ourselves, while others (Bitwarden password manager, Gitlab, email accounts) need to be managed. Occasionally the team needs help with email setup.

Tasks include

  • Maintain the entire hosting setup for our product Impact Stack, including security updates
  • Support other teams by maintaining internal tools, helping them with local setups, improving the work environments
  • Plan and work towards bigger changes, scaling the systems and making improvements in the hosting environment (together with the dev team)
  • Take care of small hosting related tasks (review merge requests, support onboarding of clients, SSL, manage SSH keys, etc.)
  • Ongoing monitoring of our systems, error monitoring, improving the observability stack
  • Responding to incidents in collaboration with other teams

What we are looking for

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar technology
  • Very good written and spoken communications (primary language: English, German is an advantage)
  • Eager to take initiative when it comes to improvements and to learn about new areas of technology
  • Hands-on experience with Linux based server environments and the core systems we use
  • Detail oriented and thorough while welcoming failure as an opportunity to improve
  • Patience and resilience to overcome obstacles
  • Flexible when it comes to tasks and specific technology used to solve problems
  • Excitement about working with nonprofits, NGOs, charities, unions and progressive organisations
  • Ability to work fairly independently as a member of a tightly knit team

What we can offer

  • A fairly independent role at an innovative company, where we put our values into practice and we're never afraid to reinvent ourselves
  • Working for well known international charities and helping them create impact
  • A development team that has established processes, many years of experience and a very detailed understanding of the product
  • A  hosting environment based on “best practice” process that has grown with the product over the years
  • A wonderful team with a friendly culture and supportive colleagues
  • A work environment where learning, innovation and improvement is celebrated
  • Somewhat flexible working hours (as long as the systems are not impacted)
  • Partly flexible choice of work place (but weekly presence at the Vienna Office is a requirement)
  • A salary typical of the nonprofit sector: between € 2.855 and € 3.335 gross per month (38,5h full time equivalent, 14 salaries per year). That is a full time equivalent of € 39.970 to € 46.690 gross salary per year - depending on your experience.
